Continued Education: Janell Geason on Bridal Beauty
At Posh Salon, we’re always learning. Educating our stylists and makeup artists is one of our highest priorities. This past Sunday, we hosted Janell Geason, Aveda’s Global Makeup Artist, in our studio. Talk about starstruck! We were honored to have her here to show us tips and tricks on doing makeup for one of the most important days in a woman’s life...yup, we’re talking bridal makeup.
Located in the heart of Williamsburg, we’re surrounded by gorgeous venues and brides-to-be. While we’ve been offering professional bridal makeup for years now, we always want to be sure that we’re learning the best way to do so. Bridal makeup can help a bride and the most important women in her life feel confident and beautiful on that day. We’re here to do all we can to help her feel that way.
While Janell covered bridal makeup, she taught us much more than that. She dove into topics that covered every aspect of the day from the original consultation to the final touches on makeup. What makes Aveda’s training different is that it offers our stylists and makeup artists the ability to learn the entire process rather than just one specific part. When they can see the entire “movie” rather than just their role, it leads to a successful experience for both them and the bride. Let’s dive in and talk about some of the topics taught by Janell.
The consultation is that first step where a bride gets to know their potential makeup artist. Not only will this help both parties feel more comfortable, but it will allow them to talk through the entire look and the goals of the bride. Janell covered what questions to ask to make sure the artist correctly understands what the bride envisions for their day. This is one of the most important parts of the entire process!
Along with this comes learning how to color match, as it’s essential that the makeup blends seamlessly with the bride’s skin. Since every face we see in the studio is different, color matching allows the artist to come up with the perfect color to bring along for that day. One other important aspect for deciding on bridal makeup is taking into account the style of the wedding and bride. For example, if the wedding is in the Spring with lots of bright florals, a dark lip may not be what the bride wants. Knowing the style of the wedding and bride can help the artist create a look they’ll love.
Your bride has a vision...and it’s important that you stick to it! A successful consultation is key to a successful day-of makeup application. We love that our brides will feel confident knowing that their vision will be well executed by our artists and that they’ll feel beautiful all day long.
The techniques of bridal makeup can’t be ignored. The makeup needs to last through tears (happy ones, of course!) and a full day, and the makeup needs to photograph well. Knowing this, Janell led our team through two separate techniques on a model.
Side note: We want to give our models a huge THANK YOU! We put it out into the social media universe that we were looking and we couldn’t be more thankful for the volunteers that got pampered by our artists. You all looked beautiful!
While learning from watching a professional like Janell work is a great way to learn, our artists got a chance to work hands-on under her guidance. The results were GORGEOUS to say the least. You can see a few of the final looks below:
